The Theather of the Oppressed presents: A Litanny for Survival

Where: At Earlham College – Wilkinson Theater; 4th, 5th and 6th of March at 7:30 pm

For those of us who live at the shoreline
standing upon the constant edges of decision
crucial and alone
for those of us who cannot indulge
the passing dreams of choice
who love in doorways coming and going
in the hours between dawns
looking inward and outward
at once before and after
seeking a now that can breed
futures
like bread in our children’s mouths
so their dreams will not reflect
the death of ours:

For those of us
who were imprinted with fear
like a faint line in the center of our foreheads
learning to be afraid with our mother’s milk
for by this weapon
this illusion of some safety to be found
the heavy-footed hoped to silence us
For all of us
this instant and this triumph
We were never meant to survive.

And when the sun rises we are afraid
it might not remain
when the sun sets we are afraid
it might not rise in the morning
when our stomachs are full we are afraid
of indigestion
when our stomachs are empty we are afraid
we may never eat again
when we are loved we are afraid
love will vanish
when we are alone we are afraid
love will never return
and when we speak we are afraid
our words will not be heard
nor welcomed
but when we are silent
we are still afraid

So it is better to speak
remembering
we were never meant to survive

Creation is a process of destruction

Creation is a process of destruction. This complex and profound idea that the universe is the result of the destruction of a pre-existing universe, is found accessible in our understanding of the first expressions of art by humankind. This creative, therefore, destructive system is encouraged by the seeking of beauty. In the seeking of beauty, lines and symbols are used to recreate a many-sided world that originated in the hands of the Creator: the artist. Since creation could be considered a process of destruction, time gets subverted, and consequently, is reduced to a concrete experience rather than an abstract one. In this process, the past, the present and the future co-exist in the same moment. Duality is the result of these interactions. Graphically, my mural “La Creación y la Evolución de la Dualidad Humana” depicts the evolution of an ancient way of understanding this incomprehensible universe. Beginning with the early use of clean lines and circles leading to the complex portrayal of humankind, the mural desmostrates the evolution of a revolutionary ideology which is supported by its indigenous tradition. What we call civilization nowadays is the result of the evolution of our conception of duality. The universe gets destroyed and recreates itself second by second, and a single individual is a series of events and movements that overlap, creating a credible image of humankind. Therefore, revolution is supported by a strong interaction of our traditional concepts and understanding of the universe that inspire our reasons and actions for freedom and justice.

Destructionism

Art is a creation process; therefore, it is destructive. Destruction is a natural process and a coherent interpretation of human evolution. Mankind is destructive by nature. Every process carried out by mankind implies creation as much as destruction.
